Unfortunately no. We strip all html away from titles and labels in the menu ... We will re-add support for <i> class for labels in next release, so that you can use font awesome icons. Sorry if it stopped working, but was never intended to work earlier either.

That is correct yes. It should really be default from your server. You can just add it to the .htaccess file ... We don't add these things by default, because it is not X3's responsibility to subjectively impose settings that are not directly related to X3.
