Facebook thumb problem

03 Apr 2011, 14:43

Hi Karl, Nick!
I have some weird behaviour, when I want to share a folder to FB, I don't get preview thumb...

http://www.geopalstudio.com/v2g/#/content/Hdr/set2/

http://www.geopalstudio.com/v2g/#/conte ... Panos/Bar/

and maybe more...
the weird thing is that these are newer ones...and some/most other folders do generate thumb for FB...
any ideas how I can fix that?
Thansk in adavance!

You are saying that some folders/images work flawlessly, while images in these new folders are not working? No other pattern to the inconsistency?

You sure you don't have some kind of hotlink protection? ... maybe something with permissions disallowing Facebook from picking up any data ...

Did you upgrade Imagevue recently between the creation of your folders?

Thank you Karl,
no hotlink protection, and yes, I think I have upgraded several times...To me it looks like the thumb is not generated or the link is not working for it (the folder) because if I go inside and open an image and share it, it appears with thumb!
I have tried regenerating the thumbs for that folder with no luck!
yes some /older and not onlt/ folders work flawlessly, others not!
If you need I can setup a user/pass for you?
p.s. you can try even now to check it for yourself, for some it works for some nada...

Best, George

Here, it doesn't work for folder or for an image ... Let's see what Nick says, and get a 3rd opinion.

This is strange, I can't blame anything:

Image: http://www.geopalstudio.com/v2g/content ... final2.jpg
Thumb: http://www.geopalstudio.com/v2g/content ... final2.jpg
Share page: http://www.geopalstudio.com/v2g/?share= ... /Hdr/set2/

Everything is correct but Facebook doesn't pick it up, I think it might be related to the image size. Almost 800 kb for a 1024x700 image is just too much.

Strange, but frustrating, Nick. Thank you for your time...
800 kb might be big for 1024 but isn't FB picking the small thumb? I should go and see other examples where that works but I am pretty sure I resize all the pics the same way...hmm I am like the biggest fan of the Sharing button and now again some strange unidentified glitches on me :(

Best regards, G

on this one:

http://www.geopalstudio.com/v2g/#/conte ... Panos/Bar/

FB doesn't pick the thumb of the main folder, BUT it does pick the thumbs of the first 2 photos alone AND it doesn't want to pick the 3rd one... Weird! all the thumbs are there... and if it was a matter of size it wouldn't pick any of photo/folder thumbs...my theory..

Will check again and try to isolate the problem and maybe find a way to avoid this, thanks again!

Just checked it once again, everything seem to be in place:
Code
<meta property="og:title" content="Pumping station" />
<meta property="og:type" content="album" />
<meta property="og:url" content="http://www.geopalstudio.com/v2g/#/content/Hdr/set2/" />
<meta property="og:image" content="http://www.geopalstudio.com/v2g/content/Hdr/set2/final2.jpg" />
<meta property="og:description" content="" />
Code
<img src="http://www.geopalstudio.com/v2g/content/Hdr/set2/final2.jpg" alt="Pumping station">
Looks like it is something on their side.

I can confirm it is something with Facebook. Just try sharing the following image link directly in Facebook, and you will see it does not create a thumbnail:
http://www.geopalstudio.com/v2g/content ... final2.jpg

This is what you get:
Image

Then I tried another image:
http://www.geopalstudio.com/v2g/content ... bovo_1.jpg

This is what you get:

To be honest, I have absolutely no idea why Facebook is refusing to create preview for some of the photos. I have compared the photos, and can not see any difference unless there is something special with the JPG profile that Facebook can not handle for some reason. All I can say, is that it has nothing to do with Imagevue.

ok guys...
Now another question, is there any possibility to be able to choose thumbnail from all of the files...like sharing a gallery from wordpress or whatever?
Now there is only 1 thumb, don't know how it is chosen (folder photo thumb?)
Thanks, this little enhancement will be great if possible!

Right now Imagevue displays the first thumbnail it finds. We will think about changeable thumbnail, but I don't have any good ideas on how to do it right now to say the truth.

Thank you Nick, I am sure you are smart enough to find a way, maybe look how other platforms do that...no idea...
Thanks again, have a great weekend!

Well, there is a simple solution if you want to set it manually at least. Edit iv-includes/templates/index.gallery.phtml, find the code:
Code
<?php if ($this->firstImage): ?>

												<?php if ((ivPath::canonizeRelative(substr($this->firstImage->thumbnail, 0, strlen($this->contentPath))) !== $this->contentPath)): ?>
													<img src="<?php echo $this->url(array('c' => 'xml', 'a' => 'thumb', 'path' => $this->firstImage->getPrimary())) ?>" <?php echo htmlspecialchars($this->firstImage->title) ?>" style="float: left;" />
												<?php else: ?>
													<img src="<?php echo htmlspecialchars($this->firstImage->thumbnail); ?>?<?php echo $this->firstImage->getThumbnailMTime(); ?>" alt="<?php echo htmlspecialchars($this->firstImage->title) ?>" style="float: left;" />
												<?php endif; ?>

											<?php endif; ?>
Remove it all, and simply add your own img:
Code
<img src="path/image.jpg" />
Facebook will use the image you add there when sharing the global page.

Something again connected with facebook sharing, didn't want to start another topic, when you share a photo this is what you read next to the thumb in FB:

api.addthis.com

you don't have the name of the site, you don't have file name or description, can this be corrected?
Thank you, hope you see my point,
Best, G
